Have you ever had a computer chair break under you? Maybe the arm snapped, or a wheel cracked off or perhaps the back just gave out. It's happened to many people and the vast majority of them were a few pounds overweight. Office chairs for overweight people are designed to sustain extra pounds and won't break like the regular chairs that say they are good for up to 150-200 lbs.
Unfortunately, obesity is a growing problem in North America and if you are one of the many who find themselves struggling to lose weight, then you need a chair that you don't have to worry about. If you find yourself wincing every time you settle into your office chair, or gingerly twisting in your chair, wary of sudden movement that might cause something to snap, a better chair is needed.
Chairs For Desks
What many people don't realize is that the average office chair was never designed to hold much weight. They were designed for the jogging businessman or the svelt secretary, not for people like us, who have had a few kids and haven't lost the baby weight, or those who have so much work that they just can't find time to exercise or diet. A sturdier chair is something that you can really make use of and will last for a long time, so it is a worthy investment.
What should you look for in office chairs for overweight people? There are a few things:
Metal construction. At the very least, the base and wheel attachments need to be metal. This will help the chair distribute the weight evenly, preventing those snapped off wheels that can leave you tumbling to the floor in front of your co-workers.
Comfy seat. If you work in your desk chair, you're going to want that seat to be comfortable. Unfortunately, when you have a little extra padding in your rear, chair cushions tend to compress rather quickly, so you'll want to look for one that offers a softer seat.
Wider arms. The more you weigh, the wider you are. That can be a problem with regular office chairs that have arms that pinch you into the chair. Office chairs for overweight people should be wider to accommodate you.
You will also want to make sure that the chair is actually rated for higher weight loads. Most chairs only handle 150-200, but many of us weigh over that. This is no time to round down . . . look for a chair that can handle at least 25 lbs. more than you weigh.
There are a number of office chairs for overweight people on the market. They are designed to last longer and while they might cost a little extra, it's worth it for the peace of mind you'll have.
